PHILOSOPHY
Listen to the material
Even a single piece of material is infused with the power of nature. The local climate, changing seasons and blessings of soil, water and sunlight are the source of life. Amuami works with artisans skilled in drawing out this essence, listening to the voice of the material. The act of making begins with nature itself.
Remix to challenge convention
In Japan, awase has long been considered an art on its own. The process of pairing seemingly unrelated elements and making new associations between them has the power to shift perspectives and create new value. Traditional arts and cutting-edge technology. Modernism and wabi-sabi. Simplicity and extravagance. Combining contrasts in a cohesive manner, Amuami challenges the conventions of the era.
Look beyond the here and now
There are no limits to the imagination. Embracing the concept of mitate, Amuami invites the viewer to look again, to see with new eyes. Works can be perceived in countless ways, alluding to scenes as varied as the majestic grandeur of the Kiyomizu stage and the moon’s silky glow. Layered with meanings, even the smallest details have the power to open doors to new worlds.
Attention to the finest details
The spirit of craftsmanship provides a link between past, present and future. Amuami works with artisans with an uncompromising approach to quality from start to finish, right down to the finest details. The pursuit of new forms of expression presents unique challenges, providing a platform for the evolution of traditional crafts in Japan.
Designed to grow with time
Growth takes time. Time reveals beauty. Amuami’s creations take shape in the hands of seasoned artisans, yet it is within the landscape of daily life they truly become whole. Designs embrace yohaku (empty space), inviting a silent dialogue that ebbs and flows with the passage of time. As connections deepen, the story of each aesthetic artefact begins to unfold.
